Sheff Utd vs Millwall – This Saturday at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United will host Millwall in a Championship match in search of their first three points of the year.

The Blades were eliminated from the EFL Cup on Tuesday after losing their season opener on the road to freshly relegated Watford, while their opponents started the season with a home win over Stoke City last weekend.

After Paul Heckingbottom’s appointment early last season sparked an improvement at Bramall Lane and saw the Blades secure a playoff berth, Sheffield United entered the 2017 Championship campaign expecting to earn a return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

Eventually finishing in fifth place thanks to a strong second half of the season, they earned a semi-final matchup with Nottingham Forest. The South Yorkshire club forced extra time despite losing 1-0 at home and conceding first at the City Ground.

Even though they came up short in the penalty shootout, Heckingbottom made some changes to his squad over the summer as the Blades prepared for their second season back in the Championship.

Gibbs-White, Ben Davies, and Conor Hourihane’s loan deals all came to an end, and new players such as Anel Ahmedhodzic, Ciaran Clark, Tommy Doyle, and Reda Khadra were brought into Bramall Lane.

After a scoreless first half, the Blades’ season-opening trip to Watford proved too much, and they fell by a single goal after Joao Pedro finished off a breakaway for the Hornets.

Now that they have returned home, Heckingbottom’s squad will try to capitalise on playing their first league game at Bramall Lane this season and earn all three points in their quest to return to the upper echelons of English soccer’s second division.

Millwall, meanwhile, enter the new season aiming to make even more progress under Gary Rowett. The Lions were ninth last season, and they missed out on the top eight only because of a loss on the final day of the season.

In October, they defeated Saturday’s opponents 2-1 at Bramall Lane, and in February, Jake Cooper scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at The Den.

The London club, who finished just outside the top six last season, got off to a good start in this year’s race for the playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Stoke City at home on Saturday. Both goals were scored by rookie Charlie Cresswell.

Rowett’s team rode high off of that victory to go to Cambridge United on Tuesday for an EFL Cup first-round fixture, but they were eliminated from the competition after a 1-0 loss to the U’s, scored by Liam O’Neill. Millwall will return to the Championship this week seeking to beat Sheffield United.
