Bill Foley has justified his controversial decision to sack Gary O’Neil and bring in Andoni Iraola.

O’Neil was unexpectedly fired last week after having helped the Cherries win the Premier League.

I’m a great fan of Gary O’Neil,” Foley stated in a statement to talkSPORT anchor Jim White. We gave him the opportunity to be the head coach last November when we put him in that role, and after some starts and stops in January, he did deliver.

“I like Gary, and I think he’ll succeed. He’s releasing a resume that demonstrates how he prevented relegation and maintained a team in the Premier League.

“The long and the short of it is that. The focus was on a different opportunity, not Gary.
