When he was still a teenager, Jurgen Klopp attempted to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian during his first full season in command of the Reds.
The winger continued to work in his own country, but Klopp was so enthralled with him that he took a personal plane to Sao Paulo to monitor his progress further.
“When Rodrygo went to sign his first professional contract with Santos, aged 16, a Liverpool director called me saying that Klopp already knew the player, had seen the material, and had already come to see Rodrygo personally,” Rodrygo’s agent, Nick Arcuri, told Canal do Nicola.
“He looked up ‘talents from Brazil’ on YouTube, and he saw Rodrygo, who looked to be rather young.
“He liked him when he got to Brazil. The Liverpool director wanted him to be his first signing, Rodrygo, so they got in touch with me.
When Elano, a former midfielder for Manchester City, learned about Liverpool’s cut-price agreement in early 2017, he was serving as Santos’ assistant coach. Rodrygo was subsequently able to stay with Santos for another year before moving to Madrid.
