The 32-year-old winger was released by Everton in the summer and had agreed to join Burnley, but the transfer fell through. Townsend said he was in tears.

Over the summer, he told talkSPORT he had many offers but would only join another club if it fit.

Erik ten Hag feels Alejandro Garnacho was ‘not good enough’ in his prior starts this season after scoring in Man United’s Carabao Cup triumph over Crystal Palace.

After a much-needed 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend, the Red Devils beat the Eagles 3-0 yesterday night.

Garnacho opened the scoring for United before Casemiro and Anthony Martial scored in the 19-year-old Argentina ace’s first appearance since a loss to Tottenham five weeks earlier.

According to manager Ten Hag, “You have seen at the start of the season we played him and then his contribution was not good enough.”

“But he did good things. He’s always a threat, even when he’s not playing well.

“He must learn that he will always have his moment and be decisive when defending because of his great qualities.

“Not only off the ball. I hope he enters the box correctly today to finish.

“But I think it’s normal for a player his age to have room for improvement.

“Everyone likes him—fans, team, I—but we also have to demand and push him because he can act very well but must show it every day.”

Ollie Watkins is prepared to commit to Aston Villa with a new long-term deal.

Since Watkins’ current contract expires in the summer of 2025, talks between Villa and the striker are set to intensify. Talks began at the end of the previous season.

Both parties are eager to come to an agreement because Watkins is regarded as an important component of manager Unai Emery’s plans.
