Thibaut Courtois has hit back at Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco after claims about the goalkeeper’s recent absence.

After Romelu Lukaku was named captain for the draw against Austria on Saturday, Tedesco asked the Real Madrid star leave the Red Devils’ international camp.

The manager said: “I wish I could claim it’s an injury, but I can’t lie,” when he spoke on Monday.

In response, Courtois posted a statement on his personal website.

“I was astonished to hear the coach’s press conference this afternoon,” wrote Courtois, “in which he provided a partial and subjective description of a private talk we had after the match against Austria.

“I want to be clear that this is neither the first nor the last occasion that I have discussed locker room-related matters with a coach, but it is the first time that someone has chosen to share it publicly.

Despite my tremendous disappointment, I want to make it known that the coach’s evaluations are inaccurate.

Bukayo Saka’s stunning season has come to a spell-binding end as he netted a hat-trick inside 13 minutes for England.

The Arsenal player opened the scoring for England against North Macedonia on the half-hour mark with a right-footed shot into the roof of the net.

He then netted two goals in the first six minutes of the second half, the second coming from outside the box and rifled into the top left corner of the goal after latching onto a well placed long ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And a short while later, he scored from close range after collecting Harry Kane’s through ball to complete his hat trick.

The 21-year-old Saka made history on Monday night when he scored his first triple of his professional career.

With Harry Kane scoring first and Marcus Rashford adding a second goal on the verge of halftime, England quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to his goal.

After making it 6-0 with a tap-in after 64 minutes, replacement Kalvin Phillips didn’t let Gareth Southgate’s team rest.

Nine minutes later, after John Stones was brought down in the North Macedonia area, Kane scored his second goal and England’s seventh goal from the penalty spot to complete the 7-0 drubbing.

Manager Southgate responded, “Yeah, I think he’s there,” when asked how close Saka is to playing at an elite level.

“What struck us when he first joined the Arsenal club was that he was playing at a tremendously high level for a team that was struggling.

“Then, when the squad was functioning well, he was still an important player and giving excellent work.

So, given our constant exposure to this atmosphere, it speaks a lot about his thinking and pressure-handling skills. He is a pleasure to deal with.
