The Presidential Records Act, which requires that White House records be turned over to the National Archives after a president leaves office, may be at the root of this unannounced FBI raid. This past January, the National Archives had to fly to Mar-a-Lago to acquire 15 boxes of paperwork that were due to be given to them by law. The National Security Agency was contacted by the Archives after discovering that some of those documents contained secret information (via CNN).

Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of the former president, appears to indicate that the root of the problem is lost White House papers. Trump believes that this is the most likely reason for the raid, she said Fox News, but he has “every authority” to remove them from the White House. However, inappropriate handling of sensitive data is illegal, and Trump’s attorney Christina Bobb, who was present during the raid, claimed that records were seized (via NBC News).
