Kick-off at 21:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán (Sevilla)
Thanks to an eight-match La Liga (LL) unbeaten run (W7, D1) culminating in five straight victories, Sevilla remain in title contention and start this round just a few points off the pace. Showing admirable fighting qualities, those five wins were each by one-goal margins, and additionally, they only conceded once after HT in that sequence.
Having not drawn any of their last ten home league games (W9, L1), the hosts can go for broke in their pursuit for the title given they lead the side in fifth place by 17 points! Interestingly though, they are the division’s only team yet to rescue a point having conceded first at home, and none of their home LL matches this term were won by the side that conceded first.
The first goal proved just as crucial across each of Athletic Bilbao’s previous seven league matches, although thankfully for them their opponents never managed to grab the opener (W1, D6). European football may still be an outside ambition for the visitors, though conceding late goals has set them back in this regard. They’ve conceded their previous four LL goals after the 70th minute, two of which were equalisers after the 80th minute that cost them four points.
Winless in eight LL visits to Sevilla (D2, L6) and also without a victory in five league away trips (D4, L1), it’s no surprise Athletic start as outsiders. Worryingly for them, they have an uninspired record as such across this LL season so far (D5, L4).
Players to watch: Youssef En-Nesyri has scored twice across Sevilla’s last four home LL matches, and his side have now won each of his last 11 goalscoring league outings. Similarly, Athletic are unbeaten in matches in which their top LL scorer this term, Álex Berenguer (eight goals), netted (W6, D1).
