Already looking like an established top-flight side, newly-promoted Rayo Vallecano sit sixth in La Liga (LL) coming into the weekend. There’s always room for improvement though, as consistency has lacked within the Rayo camp recently, with all of their last six LL fixtures producing a different result from the one prior (W2, D1, L3).
Rayo’s undefeated start when hosting (W5, D1) is currently their longest home run without defeat in the top-flight since October 2002. Yet, a visit from Mallorca usually spells trouble, with Rayo winning just two of their 14 LL H2Hs against the visitors (D4, L8), while only posting a lower win percentage against Barcelona and Real Madrid among active LL teams.
Joining them in promotion last season, Mallorca have found the top tier of Spanish football slightly tougher, but the sight of them sitting 13th in the table prior to the round shows they are holding their own. Yet, they’ll feel a very real sense of frustration after scoring first in three of their last four games, only to end up sharing the spoils each time partly due to conceding three goals after the 90-minute mark.
Manager Luis García will be keeping quiet about his personal H2H record with Rayo, having lost six of the last seven games in all competitions against them. However, what he lacks in positive personal H2H history, his side compensates for, as ‘Los Piratas’ have won on five of their last eight visits to Rayo.
Players to watch: Óscar Trejo’s six assists in 12 LL fixtures thus far is the highest top-flight tally at this stage of the season by a Rayo player in the 21st century, while Mallorca forward Ángel Rodríguez has scored three of his last five domestic goals away from home.
- Rayo Vallecano’s form in last 5 matches: LDWLW.
