The Dutch midfielder, now 31 years old, left Anfield for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer but has struggled since arriving in France. With most of his 38 appearances coming off the bench, he was deemed the “Ligue 1 flop of the season.”

As a result, Wijnaldum is eager to leave Parc des Princes, and several clubs in the Premier League have been linked to him. According to Corriere dello Sport and the Daily Mail, though, it is Jose Mourinho’s Roma who are in the front of the pursuit to recruit him.

Last season, the Special One guided the Italians to the Europa Conference League. This summer, he has already had a successful transfer window. The Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic and the Italian striker Paulo Dybala, formerly of Manchester United and Juventus, respectively, have been signed by him at no cost.

Wijnaldum

Wijnaldum is expected to join them on an obligation to buy loan for the upcoming season. There will reportedly be no up-front cost, but an £8 million buyout if the star player meets certain appearance and Champions League qualification requirements for Roma.

Wijnaldum is aware that his time at PSG is limited because he was not included in the Parasians’ preseason team that toured Japan earlier this month.

Everton, Leicester, and West Ham were all interested in signing him when he announced his want to return to the Premier League, but it now appears that he will instead join forces with Mourinho.

When Wijnaldum arrived at Liverpool from Newcastle in a £25 million trade in 2016, he was quickly embraced by fans at Anfield. During his five years with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, he won the Premier League, the Club World Cup, and the Champions League with the team. Over the course of 237 games across all competitions, he scored 22 times.
