UB40’s performance and a scene from a planned “Peaky Blinders” stage production are two of the attractions of Birmingham’s 2022 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.

On August 8, a scene from the U.K.-wide theater production “Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby” will be performed at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, along with a specially commissioned song by Laura Mvula that was inspired by the theme song of the TV program, Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand.” The theatrical performance will have its global premiere at Birmingham Hippodrome on September 27 as a part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. It was written and adapted for the stage by its creator Steven Knight, and it was choreographed and directed by Rambert’s artistic director Benoit Swan Pouffer.

The ceremony will highlight the past, present, and future musical talent of the area under the direction of creative directors Amber Rimell and Bronski from TAWBOX, including Apache Indian, Beverley Knight, Dexys, Goldie, Jacob Banks, Jaykae, Jorja Smith, Laura Mvula, Ash, Mahalia, Musical Youth, Neelam Gill, Panjabi MC, Raza Hussain, Talulah-Eve, The Selecter,

A trip through the city’s shifting faces will be included in Monday’s performance, which will feature set design by Misty Buckley. There will also be homage to Wolverhampton’s 1980s street art movement and a look at the Broad St music venue and how it influenced music and fashion around the world.

“With this closing ceremony, we wanted to produce a stunning line-up of worldwide talents from the West Midlands for an explosive musical production to cap an amazing 11 days of sport and culture,” stated Martin Green, chief creative officer of Birmingham 2022. As we bring these great home games to a fitting conclusion, the potpourri of high-octane acts will showcase the bright spirit and cultural legacy of this incredible city.

During the closing ceremony, the Australian state of Victoria, which will host the Commonwealth Games in 2026, will receive a ceremonial handover. It will be streamed live on iPlayer and BBC One.
