Venue: Stade Pierre-Mauroy (Villeneuve d’Ascq)
Lille sit proudly atop Ligue 1 (L1), and four points in their two remaining games would guarantee their first league title since 2011! A strong defence has been integral to their success, highlighted by their league-high clean sheet percentage (55.56%). Consequently, their fixtures have produced a league-low goal average of just 2.33 per game.
The division’s leaders have struggled at home recently, claiming just two wins from their previous six top-flight home matches (D3, L1), although, they’ve not conceded after the break across any of their previous 11, which is encouraging. Subsequently, ‘Les Dogues’ are still unbeaten at home in L1 after drawing or leading at HT this season (W9, D4).
St Étienne are reeling after posting their worst points tally after 36 rounds of a L1 campaign since 2009/10 (W12, D9, L15). However, a return of five wins from their previous eight top-flight outings (L3) – the same amount as in their prior 26 – has at least secured them a 18th successive top-flight season next term.
Claude Puel’s men have won five (L2) of their last seven L1 road trips – the same amount as in their prior 21 (W5, D3, L13) – while scoring first on six occasions across that period. The H2H history makes for worrying reading however, as the visitors are winless in their last 19 top-flight visits to Lille (D6, L13), with their last victory coming back in 1993!
Players to watch: Lille’s Burak Yilmaz has netted the opener before the 30th minute in three of his last five goalscoring L1 games, although Wahbi Khazri will try to beat him to it as he’s scored St Étienne’s opener in all five top-flight matches that he’s scored in – including the reverse H2H.
- Lille’s form in last 5 matches: WWWDW.
- St Etienne’s form in last 5 matches: WWLLW.
PREDICTION: Home Win
