Europe – Europa League
Date: Thursday, 8 March 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes (Granada)
Granada are having a fairytale debut season in Europe, and having already beaten teams from eight different countries in the UEFA Europa League (UEL), they now have the chance to make that nine as they take on three-time European champions Manchester United. However their recent form will be a concern as Granada have registered three straight HT/FT defeats coming into this clash.
Four wins from their last five home matches (L1) shows Granada can register results on their own turf though, and forms part of a ten-game run here in which the team that scored first has gone unbeaten in regulation time. With the eventual winner netting a first-half opener in their last four UEL home games too (W3, L1), it’s clear a good start may be the only way for underdogs Granada to continue their fairytale campaign.
That said, they are facing a Man United side that refuses to give up, and that’s won 25 points from losing positions this Premier League season – nine more than any other club – after their 2-1 comeback win at the weekend. However in the UEL they’ve been more solid at the back, registering three clean sheets from four knockout games this term (W2, D2).
The visitors have European pedigree in abundance, and have scored in every UEL knockout tie they’ve played outside of England (14), and won ‘to nil’ in both they’ve played this campaign. Subsequently, Man United have now registered a clean sheet in five of their previous six competitive road trips (W3, D2, L1).
Players to watch: Roberto Soldado has scored after the 70th minute in Granada’s last two UEL matches – he also netted their previous La Liga strike during that period too. Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood scored Man United’s winner at the weekend – his last five strikes have either put his side ahead or level.
- Granada’s form in last 5 matches: LLLWW.
- Manchester United’s form in last 5 matches: WLWWD.
PREDICTION: Away/Draw and Under 4.5
