EUROPE: Europa Conference League
Time: 5:45 PM
Venue: De Kuip (Rotterdam)
The signs are positive for Feyenoord so far in this inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) campaign as they remain the only unbeaten side in Group E after two rounds (W1, D1). The hosts may have failed to win back-to-back Eredivisie games following their latest UECL success, but another European victory here would go a long way to securing their first progression from a UEFA group stage at the fifth attempt.
The famous Dutch outfit are no strangers to facing opponents from just over the border in neighbouring Germany, as they’ve both scored and conceded 50 goals across their 32 previous encounters (W13, D10, L9). That result record also becomes much more dominant when taking into account just the home H2Hs (W10, D4, L2).
In contrast to their hosts, Union Berlin are yet to face Dutch opposition, though they’ll be full of confidence heading into this first meeting after recording just one defeat so far in the Bundesliga (W4, D2). The rise of Union has been a meteoric one, as this European campaign comes in just their third-ever season in Germany’s top flight!
Another feather in the cap of Union is the fact they are one of eight sides making their European group stage debut in this tournament, but just one of two along with Bodø/Glimt to pick up a win after two matchdays. Although they are nicknamed ‘the Iron Ones’, Union may need to score at least twice here if they’re to claim victory in this tight Group E after a run of just two clean sheets from their previous 11 competitive away games shows their backline is anything but solid.
Players to watch: Feyenoord’s Guus Til is on fire this season. The attacking midfielder has netted 13 goals in 16 competitive matches, including six in six UECL qualifiers. As for Union, Kevin Behrens has four goal contributions in his last four appearances (2G, 2A)..
