Africa – AFCON Qualification
Date: Friday, 26 March 2021
Kick-off at 16:00 UK/ 17:00 CET
Venue: Stade Municipal de Kintélé (Brazzaville)
Congo is currently second in the group and look set to qualify for the competition if they are able to get at least three points from the 2 games remaining. Senegal on the other hand will go into this game knowing they have already booked their place in the finals taking place in Cameroon having won all four group matches.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat to Senegal in the opening game, Congo recovered well and sit four points clear of Guinea-Bissau in the group. Senegal have won exactly half of their eight meetings with Congo, losing just twice. The last time Congo beat Senegal was way back in 1972.
Congo suffered a 2-0 defeat to Senegal the last time the Teranga Lions came visiting, they also suffered the same margin of defeat in the first leg of this qualifying series.
Congo’s coach Valdo Filho has gathered a fairly young squad with Dimitri Bissiki the most experienced player with 45 caps to his name. Shenzhen FC striker Thievy Bifouma is back in the mix and might lead the line once again, having scored 15 times from 31 games.
Senegal will have the services of Liverpool ace Sadio Mane, Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye for this game. However, Salif Sane is out of this encounter alongside Lamine Gassama and Ibrahima Mbaye who are both injured.
- Congo’s form in last 5 matches: LWDLD.
- Senegal’s form in last 5 matches: WWLWW.
