ENGLAND: Premier League
Venue: Stamford Bridge (London)
Last Saturday’s action saw Chelsea fall from the Premier League (PL)’s summit to third place after going down 3-2 to West Ham United in a feisty all-London clash. It was the first occasion since May 2016 that Chelsea had lost a PL game after taking the lead twice, giving ‘Blues’ boss Thomas Tuchel much to ponder.
Despite this, Chelsea will look to continue their penchant for early dominance, having led ‘to nil’ at the half-hour mark in three of their last four PL matches. After drawing two consecutive PL home games, continuing this early scoring trend will optimise their chances of avoiding a winless run of three straight home league games – an indignity last suffered in front of attending fans back at the very start of 2019/20.
Many Leeds fans would see a win here as their team’s biggest scalp since returning to the top flight last year. However, away league form overall this term remains a weakness (W1, D3, L3), and there seems to be little danger of this changing for the better, given that the Yorkshiremen are without a victory at Stamford Bridge since December 1999.
Further to that, Leeds have lost on nine of their last ten top-flight trips to the capital to face any club. Meanwhile, each of Leeds’ four league journeys made to any of the PL’s three ever-present London clubs under Marcelo Bielsa have seen them lose and concede 2+ goals.
Players to watch: Mason Mount is aiming to score in three successive PL outings for the first time ever in Chelsea colours, and has seen three of his last four goalscoring home league games result in a handicap-beating win ‘to nil’. Meanwhile, Daniel James is still Leeds’ last away scorer, opening his account for the ‘Whites’ against Spurs last month..
