Europe – Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 17March 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London
Chelsea will go into this game with a slim 0-1 advantage over their visitor courtesy of an Olivier Giroud wonder strike in the first leg. That away goal will be crucial for Chelsea if they can keep it together at the back against Atletico. The team is yet to taste defeat since Thomas Tuchel took over from former boss Frank Lampard, and to his credit, the team has improved defensively and posted a decent return in the attack also. However, there is still a lot to be desired from the blues frontline.
The same can be said of Atletico Madrid’s front line as the team has struggled of late to win their matches. The initial push in the league has seen them sit on top of the Laliga for a very long time now with Barcelona and Real Madrid playing catch up, but their form has been a source of concern of late as their domestic rivals close the gap on them.
While Atletico occupies the top position on the Laliga table, Chelsea on the other hand sit in fourth position on the English Premier League table. Both teams drew their domestic matches prior to this game and this might be a sign that they have both given priority to progressing in this competition.
Olivier Giroud was rested in the last league game with Chelsea playing Kai Havertz in the number 9 role for the very first time; Giroud will look to finish what he started in the first leg to see the blue over the finish line in this home fixture. A lot will be expected of him as Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham will not feature in the game alongside Thiago Silver and Jorginho.
Joao Felix, Koke, and Luis Suarez will also be expected to pull Atletico back into the competition by overturning the deficit suffered at home against the Blues.
