AS Roma vs. Manchester Utd

EUROPE: Europa League

Date: Thursday, 06 May 2021

Kick-off at 21:00 UK/ 21:00 CET

Venue: Stadio Olimpico (Rome)

A spectacular 6-2 result in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) semi-final first leg made history as Roma became the first Italian side to concede six times in an European semi-final, whilst Manchester United became the first club since Real Madrid in 1964 to score six in a major European semi-final! Compounding matters further for Roma is their current six-game winless streak across all competitions (D2, L4) – their worst such run for over three years.

They’ve also scored just once in three consecutive home games (W1, D2) which is worrying for a team that needs at least four goals here – something they’ve managed in 21.62% of their UEL home matches since the start of 2000/01. Providing some hope, Roma have scored during both halves in four of their previous five UEL home outings.

After being ousted from the last four semi-finals (all competitions) they’ve played, Manchester United are on the brink of ending that hoodoo after turning round a 2-1 HT deficit in the first leg with five second-half goals. They’ve been doing similar on the road all season though, coming back to win an incredible eight of nine Premier League away outings in which they conceded first this term.

They travel to Rome not only with that impressive comeback record, but also after going unbeaten in their previous seven matches played in Italy (W5, D2). However, with five of their previous eight competitive road trips seeing a first-half draw (four 0-0), this game might not be as high scoring as the first leg, which holds the record as the UEL’s joint-highest scoring match (group stage onwards).

Players to watch: Roma’s Edin Džeko netted in the first leg, but that was the first time in his career that he’s lost a UEL match when scoring (W11, D2, L1). In-form Edinson Cavani has scored five goals across United’s last five games – three after the 60th minute.
