Arsenal vs. West Ham

ENGLAND: Premier League

Date: 15-12-21

Time: 21:00 PM

Venue: Emirates Stadium (London)

It’s difficult to know what you’re going to get with Arsenal lately after the North London side turned in some Jekyll and Hyde-esque performances across the last five Premier League (PL) rounds (W2, L3). A disciplinary breach by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has seen him stripped of the club captaincy, but a comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton (without Aubameyang) means that manager Mikel Arteta can further alleviate the pressure on himself if he can mastermind a victory over West Ham, who Arsenal could leapfrog above and into the European places.

That will be easier said than done though, as the hosts enter this match having already tasted defeat in more PL London Derbies this season (W1, D1, L2) than in the entirety of 2020/21 (W6, D3, L1). Instead though, they can draw confidence from their fantastic home league H2H form versus the ‘Hammers’ over the last 11 years (W10, L1).

The difficulty of holding on to an unlikely top-four position was made patently clear for West Ham last time out as they could only draw 0-0 with a struggling Burnley while all of their closest rivals won. That result means that it’s now two competitive games without a goal for the Hammers, though they can at least take confidence from wins in their last two London derbies.

Even if West Ham start slowly here and fall behind, any optimistic Hammers fans would point to the fact that only Everton have picked up more points when falling behind this PL season (W3, L4). Not only that, but no side has recovered to win more away league games when trailing at half-time than West Ham this term (W2, L1).

Players to watch: Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard is currently enjoying his best run of consecutive scoring games since 2018 (three) and the last time he did that, he followed it up with a brace of assists! None of Jarrod Bowen’s last seven West Ham goals were match openers whilst he scored the second goal of the game in his most recent H2H.
